About Us

Everyone loves a pub, but the concept as we knew it in this country was not fully developed, and it took KEG to show the way.

It all began when the KEG & Thistle in Florida Road, Durban, opened its doors in August 1990. The KEG followed the precedent set by the British Free House Inns, selling a variety of different beer brands. Prior to the inception of Free House Inns, pubs were affiliated to particular breweries, and each offered only one brand of beer.

Like its British counterparts, the KEG provided a pleasant social environment, offering wholesome pub fare and a broad range of local and international beers. The KEG concept was so well received that requests came flowing in from around the country for new stores - faster than the beer on tap was being poured!

The rise of the KEG brand in the pub and restaurant industry throughout the country became authentic South African success story, and a trend which is likely to continue for years to come.
